This project in Dessel, designed by AID Architects, radically breaks with the traditional layout of a residential care facility to make way for a blend of intriguing contrasts. The common thread running through the concept is the pursuit of a place where both the young and the old feel at home, where tranquility and activity form a harmonious whole, and where well-being, care, living comfort, and nature come together in warm, contemporary architecture.

The favorable orientation of the site creates an elongated volume parallel to the street. The building follows a sinuous line, allowing it to blend seamlessly with the surrounding structures. The project consists of three phases/buildings—A, B, and C—of which Building A was completed in 2013.

Following the provisional acceptance of Building A, the architecture and engineering firm OSQB assumed the role of project manager. On behalf of the client, OSQB was responsible for coordinating the completion of the remaining outstanding items. OSQB subsequently took on the role of executive architect for Building B and also prepared the structural and mechanical/electrical engineering studies.

Building B comprises 60 service apartments and a grand café. For heating and cooling, the building was connected to the existing thermal energy storage system (KWO), which had already been installed during Phase A. By further expanding this sustainable energy supply, energy consumption is reduced and residents’ comfort is enhanced. In this way, the project not only contributes to a high-quality living environment but also to forward-looking and energy-efficient building development.
