The redevelopment of the Bond Moyson site on Ghent’s Vrijdagmarkt combines historical heritage with a contemporary and sustainable vision for the future. The design restores the relationship between the iconic building, the interior space, and the Leie River, with a green courtyard serving as a connecting element. By reorganizing the existing volumes and adding new structural elements, an open, transparent, and flexible work environment is created that meets the contemporary needs of the users.
The technical and structural design posed a crucial challenge within this complex inner-city project. To construct the underground sections, a watertight excavation pit was created using CSM (Cutter Soil Mixing) walls down to an impermeable soil layer at a depth of approximately 22 meters. This solution ensured both the stability of the surrounding buildings and the safe execution of the work in an area with a high groundwater level.
In terms of sustainability as well, a decisive choice was made in favor of forward-looking technologies. A geothermal energy system with about thirty vertical ground probes provides the foundation for the building’s heating and cooling. Combined with high-performance HVAC systems, energy-efficient ventilation, and an integrated technical infrastructure, this results in a comfortable, flexible, and energy-efficient building that is ready for the future.
