This new school replaces an old harbor building. It will have the character of an industrial building with large open spaces. Many aspects of the new building draw inspiration from ‘het Eilandje’s’ historical past. Until recently, ‘het Eilandje’ was home mainly to skippers’ houses, which featured a distinctive color scheme of white and ochre yellow—colors that are also reflected in the new building. The sloped roofs, in turn, reference the CAD warehouses that used to stand there.

The new building consists of a 6-story “front section” approximately 16.4 meters deep and four wings that are 2 and 4 stories lower, with three courtyard gardens in between. Inside the building, three double-height rooms—designed for certain classes—are arranged around a central staircase. This creates an entrance hall with a sense of spaciousness.

The base consists of a heavy foundation slab supported by foundation piles. The superstructure is an exposed concrete frame. The roof is constructed entirely of wood and consists of laminated beams topped with exposed Lignatur panels (special acoustic wood panels).
