The construction of the recreation center is, in every respect, a project carried out in collaboration with the residents of Edegem. Many residents shared their opinions on the functions and architecture of the new RC during focus groups. The original design had called for apartments to be built at the center, but these were removed from the initial plan after numerous concerns were raised by residents, who were worried about the privacy of their gardens as well as the number of parking spaces.

A focus was placed on sustainability by constructing the entire above-ground structure of the RC out of wood. The major advantage of using wood is that it prevents emissions of CO². For every metric ton of carbon sequestered in wood and used in construction, approximately 4.4 metric tons of CO₂ emissions are avoided.

The recreation center will be a place where the people of Edegem can come together and get to know one another across generations. Designed with and for the residents of Edegem, it is a building with a flexible interior that can be adapted to their changing needs.
