The project to expand Het Depot in Leuven involved the redevelopment of the former Domo building into a contemporary music and cultural center. The design created a dynamic gathering place where music, creativity, and nightlife converged, playing a significant urban role in the center of Leuven.
B-architecten combined preservation and renewal. The industrial character—such as the shed roof—was integrated into a contemporary design that met requirements for acoustics, sustainability, and fire safety. The functions were organized into distinct clusters, including concert halls, artist spaces, and support facilities, while the foyer served as a flexible central gathering place.
The structure consisted of a hybrid system of concrete and steel. Existing components were retained wherever possible, but the basement slabs and foundations were replaced to ensure sufficient load-bearing capacity. The shed roof was reinforced with steel sections. A box-in-box construction was used for the concert halls to provide optimal acoustic insulation.
The project placed a strong emphasis on sustainability and comfort, thereby creating a forward-looking cultural center that enriched city life in Leuven.
