Mediclab in Aalst is a 2.750 m² medical laboratory specializing in the analysis of samples for medical purposes. The company was housed in severely outdated buildings, and the appearance of the site no longer matched the lab’s modern image. For the renovation of this lab, three separate, adjacent buildings were integrated into a single cohesive whole. The patchwork of spaces and levels required a thorough evaluation of how the space was used. Functionality, structural clarity, and transparency were prioritized: clients are welcomed in an appropriate manner, and a pleasant workspace has been created. Through a central entrance hall, visitors are guided through the atrium to the reception area. In designing the surrounding public spaces, special attention was paid to the user experience: they exude tranquility and warmth and are bathed in light. The elevator, located centrally in the atrium, was therefore conceived as a panoramic elevator. The design of the furniture was outsourced in the first phase, but for the second phase, OSQB designed it in-house to ensure a harmonious integration between architecture and interior design, in line with the intended experiential value of both areas.
