The ‘Molens Verbruggen’ date from just after World War I. Due to their size, their characteristic warehouse architecture, and their location within the surrounding area, the site serves as a landmark. The site is situated on the outskirts of the village of Oppuurs and is bordered by the Puurs-Dendermonde tourist railway line, recreational areas, and farmland. Based on the vision outlined in the RUP, a comprehensive project has been developed that transforms the characteristics of the existing industrial buildings into high-quality housing that respects and adds value to its surroundings. The project is forward-looking while respecting the site’s historical characteristics.

A tangible link between the past and the present has been established.

The existing facade materials consist of simple facing masonry in a reddish-brown hue. When we enter the old mill building, we know and can sense that flour was once produced here. The association with the color white is therefore obvious. This is evident in the white plaster on the old interior walls. The newly designed buildings A, B, C, and D follow the spirit and significance of the old structures, both conceptually and emotionally. Together with the old mill, these buildings surround a courtyard, which—just like the interior of the old “Molens Verbruggen” building—effectively “restores” the old white environment to the present. The interplay of lines that was visible in the old facades is reflected in the new design.

The public axis running through the project zone will be extended into the recreation park; it serves as an access route for pedestrians and cyclists. Public amenities will be grouped along this axis. We believe that the axis, as conceived, creates a strong draw for the surrounding area.

Project: Construction of 30 apartments with underground parking, commercial space, and a community center, and renovation of the mill building into commercial space and 4 lofts.
