OSQB is working on the expansion of the existing production site in Grobbendonk for NOF Metal Coatings NV. The project involves the construction of new logistics and storage facilities for the storage and transshipment of hazardous goods, supplemented by additional production support functions and offices. OSQB is responsible for the architectural design and the integration of the various technical and functional requirements within a complex industrial environment.
The expansion will be built adjacent to the existing production buildings and will include a new high-bay warehouse of approximately 1,134 m², a staging and distribution area of approximately 1,265 m², covered loading and unloading docks, technical rooms, and additional supporting infrastructure. In a second phase, additional production-related functions, cold storage rooms, technical rooms, and new office spaces will be integrated into the site.
A key challenge of the project is ensuring the continuity of production and logistics operations during construction. For this reason, the project was carefully planned in phases to allow the existing operations to remain fully functional while the new infrastructure is being built. The organization of traffic flows, loading and unloading activities, and safety zones is an essential part of the design.
Safety is central in the development. The new buildings are being designed in accordance with the strictest standards for fire safety and the storage of hazardous materials. Centralizing storage and distribution functions not only increases operational efficiency but also significantly improves the safety of employees and the surrounding area. The expansion also eliminates existing logistical bottlenecks and reduces high-risk internal transport movements on the site.
Sustainability is also a key pillar of the project. Rainwater from both existing and new roof surfaces will be recovered to the maximum extent possible and fully integrated into the production process. To this end, a 600,000-liter rainwater storage tank will be installed, enabling the site to significantly reduce its dependence on external water sources. In addition, new infiltration facilities and wadis will be constructed to buffer and infiltrate rainwater locally.
In terms of energy, the focus is also on forward-looking solutions. The new buildings will be integrated into the existing energy infrastructure and will utilize sustainable technologies, including heat pumps.
Through this project, OSQB is supporting the continued growth of NOF Metal Coatings by designing a forward-looking industrial infrastructure that integrates safety, sustainability, operational efficiency, and business continuity. The expansion not only strengthens the company’s competitiveness but also supports local employment and the site’s long-term development.
