RCC Gitschotelhof is home to 190 residents, as well as a commercial space, 29 service apartments, and an underground parking garage with approximately 60 spaces. The design consists of a fragmented building block inspired by the surrounding area. The decision was made to make the fragmented building blocks accessible and to create an informal route through the block that connects the surrounding streets. The center of this route provides access to a large public green space. It offers tranquility for the residents but also serves as the perfect venue for neighborhood parties and other initiatives organized by dedicated volunteers. In this way, the residential care center is seamlessly integrated into the neighborhood.
The common areas in the residential care center were designed to be open by omitting load-bearing walls and columns. This was achieved through a structure of prefabricated floors that support one another in layers. The prefab floors are thicker than the fill layer, creating spaces that were finished with a warm wood species. Non-load-bearing walls were designed to allow for a different layout in the future; flexibility was a key consideration here. The load-bearing walls were constructed using exposed block-format sand-lime bricks.
